Chapter Eight

Jonah gently shook Aldrin until the man’s eyelashes began to flutter. “Come on, baby. Open your eyes. I have something I want to show you.” Jonah couldn’t help the thread of excitement in his voice. He had never had anyone to share things with before, at least not in more years than he cared to count.

“What time is it?” Aldrin asked as he glanced toward the windows.

“Just before dawn,” Jonah replied as he stood. “Come with me. I have something special to show you.”

Aldrin’s eyebrows rose as his eyes shot back to Jonah. “Now?”

Jonah was slowly getting used to smiling again. It seemed to be easier each time. “Yes, now.” He delighted in the small squeak he heard when he yanked back the covers. “We have to go now. I have hot chocolate and fresh breakfast burritos waiting.”

“Food?” Aldrin rolled to the side of the bed and then sat up.

Jonah handed him his clothes and then stood back and watched as Aldrin pulled them on. The man’s movements were jerky at first but smoothed out the longer he was awake.

When Aldrin pulled on his socks, Jonah dropped to one knee and helped him put on his shoes. He would prefer that Aldrin have mountain boots, but tennis shoes would have to do for now. Jonah could order him better shoes later.

He wanted Aldrin to have everything he needed…or even wanted. The desire to provide for Aldrin and protect him had cemented itself last night as he held the man in his arms and claimed him as his own.

The means to care for Aldrin sat waiting in a bank account Jonah hadn’t touched since it had been established over ten years ago. He had never touched the money left to him when his family died, not wanting to live through the bad memories associated with it.

Now, maybe he could use it for something good.

Jonah held out his hand when Aldrin finished dressing. “Come on.”

When Aldrin took his hand, Jonah led him out into the great room and over to the front door. He bundled Aldrin up in a jacket and grabbed one for himself, pulling it on. Entwining his fingers with Aldrin’s again, Jonah picked up the bag he had packed with their burritos and hot chocolate and then headed for the door.

“Where are we going?’ Aldrin asked as they left the cabin. “It’s not even light out yet.”

It was, but just barely. The sky was lightening just enough that they wouldn’t need to use a flashlight to get around. That also meant they had just about ten minutes to get where they were going or the surprise would be ruined.

“We’ll be fine.” Jonah kept a firm hold of Aldrin as he led him through the woods and higher up on the mountain. “I won’t let anything happen to you.”

When they reached the untouched meadow, Jonah pulled Aldrin to a stop. “Close your eyes.”

“What?”

“Close your eyes,” Jonah repeated. “Please? For me?”

Aldrin frowned but closed his eyes.

Jonah stepped in front of him, taking both of Aldrin’s hands in his own.
